5 Things // On Glasses, The Match, and Work.

Filed Under: Personal & Life Updates 24 Comments

1. Gabe is getting glasses. I…cannot really believe this. We took him in because his eye was crossing a little and it turns out he’s slightly farsighted. It’s crazy, because I wouldn’t have thought to take a 3-year-old for a routine eye exam, but apparently they recommend you do? I had no idea! Though Gabe loved the pediatric ophthalmologist (that word should be in a spelling bee) and all the games he got to play. Anyway, it’s such a slight prescription that it’s hardly a prescription and they’re expecting it’ll correct itself. Here’s a preview:

20140219-212018.jpg

2. By the time you read this, we should know where we’re going to be living this fall (to recap:  We’ll end up in Berkeley/San Jose, Madison [Wisconsin], Akron [Ohio], New Hampshire, or Hawaii for  year-long internship for my husband’s PhD program. It’s a match process similar to a medical residency and not entirely our choice where we end up). Assuming Mike gets matched somewhere. (25% of people don’t get matched in the first round. Yikes!) We’re so nervous and a tiny bit excited.

3. I’m starting to get the travel itch. Just a little trip to a warm place. Perhaps a last hurrah as a family of 3 this spring? We’ve gotten to travel so much together, so it seems appropriate to enjoy a little time together before this summer. Maybe on a beach? Mmm. Sounds nice.

4. I feel completely and totally out of every loop since I’m not on Twitter or Facebook right now. What is happening in the world? And with you guys? And why isn’t my house cleaner if I’m not putzing around on Twitter? (Oh, I know, because I’ve discovered this series!) It’s been a less satisfying break since we haven’t gone anywhere like we have in the past during my social media breaks (going on a trip and forgoing any effort to share it in the moment is such a good way to reconnect with these boys of mine), but it has still been good to quiet my mind for a while and tamper my share-everything-that-happens tendency. At least until March.

5. I’m hitting a really really good groove with work stuff right now. In addition to my usual couple of complete website designs I’m juggling, I’m doing some ongoing website development and have been doing all the graphics for a local music store. That combination of some design and some coding is such a satisfying balance of getting to use my problem-solving and creative skills. I’m enjoying it when I’m not feeling overwhelmed, which is a juggle in and of itself. Childcare has been another struggle, but that’s another issue for another time. (Or probably not at all. It’s kind of boring to talk about.)

My eldest was farsighted and he wore glasses from age 5 to 9. And as expected, it corrected itself by then, and no more glasses! (he’s 20 now).

I am so glad that you’re still blogging. I miss your updates on Twitter. I pray that you already know that you got the perfect match by now!

Oh! I like that success story. :) It’s been such a struggle to get him to wear glasses for more than 10 minutes! Ha.

Hi Ashley! I’m a new reader; I found your website when I was looking up info on the baking soda shampoo. Coincidentally, I live near Akron right now, and we’re (me, husband, 2 boys) going to be moving up to La Crosse, WI over the summer! Good luck with your plans! I enjoy reading the blog!

It’s definitely not possible for Gabe to get any cuter.
I can’t wait to hear where you end up! Hawaii would be SO cool. But if you are in NH you’d be near me :)

We actually did a little wager beforehand where we both wrote down where we expected to go & what we got if we were right. We both guessed New Hampshire! Alas. It would’ve been just as cold but 11 hours from my family! ;)

Gabe is so stinking cute in those glasses!! I’d personally love it if you guys came to NH- then I could actually introduce myself- and oh the play dates!

(I’m probably getting ahead of myself, but for reals, NH is awesome).

The prescription being so minor makes me almost wonder if the cost for glasses is worth it? I want to know more about this visit to the eye doctor!!! I am intrigued by your adorable 3-yr-old in glasses. Seriously, can I plop him down in a leather chair in a library and photograph him? Or rather, can you and share?

YOU ARE MOVING!!! EEEEEEEEEE! I hope the results were pleasing to you all. <3 Cannot wait to find out where you're going!

The glasses were free with insurance – so no worries! :)

He gets to go back to the eye doctor in a month – he’s SO excited to play more games! Ha.

You know, Madison is only about 7 hours from me….! :) We still go up that way every once in a while for stuff so if you are in that area you can count on seeing me.

I have nothing exciting to report at all, I’m sad to say. But after how the year started I’m ok with it. Love to see your blogs pop up.

And Gabe in glasses? Pretty freakin’ adorable.

Those glasses are ADORABLE! I remember getting glasses at a young age, it was a lot of fun at first. Then I got sick of them and got contacts at a young age. :]
