Personal & Life Updates

February Update + March Intentions.

Filed Under: Personal & Life Updates 10 Comments

Gabe-February-Ohio (1 of 1)

We rush to spend time outside when it’s sunny.

[February Update]

Still don’t spend anything. Aside from Tiny TOMS sale on Zulily that I couldn’t resist ($12 for theseas I hoped, including shipping, thanks to a credit I had), I succeeded in sticking to my Buy Nothing challenge. Just completely reprogrammed my buy stuff tendency of late last year. I have no desire to splurge or buy a bunch of stuff. WIN. Also, we’re back in the black. (Or green, since we use Mint.)

Yoga every day. Erm. About half the days were a pathetic mini-yoga session with a few downward dogs and some double pigeon action. I did start doing yoga with Gabe (since I only spend nap time working – no exercise or cooking or cleaning allowed), which has probably been my favorite effect from this intention.

Visit my grandpa.. Snafu with this one. My grandpa’s retirement apartment complex (which also has an assisted living area) is on shut-down because everyone is getting norovirus. So…that has been pushed until next week. I did call him for the first time ever and have a really nice long conversation, wherein he told me, “Yeah, the people here are really old, Ashley.” He is 90.

Give Mike my full attention 3-4 nights a week. Yes!  This was an incredibly rewarding goal. Every night that Mike asked me to hang out (ie: talk, watch TV, and eat cereal), I said yes. I didn’t say, “Ahh! I have so much work, so I can’t.” I hopped off my computer and said, “Sure! What do you want to do?” We had several long talks and I feel so much closer to him after this month.

Get Twitter situation under control. I totally feel less addicted than ever. I don’t check it all the time. I feel…balanced and sane. Success!

[March Intentions]

These are going to be short and sweet, since it’s an intense month for me (LOTS OF WORK YAY).

Say hi to people in the elevator. Living in an apartment gives me lots of opportunity for awkward conversation. I usually pull out my phone during the elevator ride, then tell my fellow rider to have a good day as they or I exit. I want to start asking people how they are and being friendly instead of silent and awkward.

No screens when someone’s talking to me. I told you that I’m doing this. It’s really freaking hard, you guys.

Find the sunshine. Whether this means driving somewhere sunny for spring break (is there ANYWHERE that is always sunny in March on the east side of the country?) or just finding some positivism in the cold, dark months, I refuse to continue to be a Debbie Downer about it.

You know what’s really funny? I try to be nice to people walking in my neighborhood … and the fact that OTHER people put their noses in their phones AS THEY’RE WALKING makes it really hard for me to successfully say hi to them!

Great job on your February goals! I’ve been making more of an effort to spend time with my husband, too. It really is so rewarding. <3

My goal for February was to unitask- do one thing at a time. It meant that I either told my kids I would be with them in a moment (a lot) or shut my computer right then (also happened a lot). But I really liked doing either one or the other, rather than trying to write an email while answering a question. I’m not good at that- why try?
This reminds me that I don’t have a March goal yet. Ack.

I did that last February! (Here’s my experience.) It was hard. But I also did it while reading In Praise of Slowness, which got me excited about it.

Oh interesting! I like reading other peoples’ experience with similar things. I’ve never heard of In Praise of Slowness. Seems like a fitting read.

You did a great job on your February goals! I need to definitely bring the sunshine in March, but man would it be so much easier if we lived in Puerto Rico? haha
