Personal & Life Updates

Seven Quick Takes.

Filed Under: Personal & Life Updates 19 Comments

1. Last night I went to Red and White on Thursday Night, an Arthritis Foundation fundraiser. I won tickets on Rachel’s blog and took my sister as my date since Mike had a late class. It was SO much fun. We ate tons of amazing food like white chocolate cherry bread pudding, sushi, arugula-and-sun-dried-tomato grilled cheese, and dark chocolate-covered caramel-dipped pretzels. Also, WINE. Sparkling wine. I made a fool of myself several times (wearing only one earring, asking a guy what wine was in the dump bucket, and generally just being my not-fancy self), but had a blast hanging out with my sister and meeting Rachel and her husband. Go team.

2. Today is my first snow day in two years. It was such a treat to get a phone call at 6 am telling me to go back to bed. File under: perk of working at a school.

3. I want to drink my coffee black. Except that I don’t. Coffee is my reason for waking up in the morning. It fulfills me in a way no other food or drink does. And I’m not just being dramatic. It makes me so happy. But sometimes I feel like I can’t be a REAL coffee lover because I put a teaspoon of sugar in my coffee (or a few pumps of flavored syrup) and a splash of half and half. It tastes amazing that way. I can drink it with just cream (I prefer it without sugar if I’m enjoying it with a pastry), but plain black coffee tastes like sludge to me. Anyway, milk neutralizes the acid in coffee, so whatever! I love coffee with cream and I don’t care who knows it!

4. The winner of the wood print from InstaThis was Karen Ross! Karen, I’ll be in touch. If you’re bummed you didn’t win (I’m so sorry!), you can get 15% off with the code ALITTLE15, which expires February 14.

5. We got rid of our coffee table and got a giant ottoman instead. The purpose of this was because our coffee table always ended up being cluttered. As I was taking some photos this morning, I realized that, um, this didn’t help. AT ALL. (There’s something about taking photos that makes you realize just how much a mess your apartment is.)

6. We have Hulu Plus for a month and I am shocked by how many commercials there still are. Especially on workout videos! This morning I did a 19-minute yoga video with SEVEN commercials. That is insane, right? Why pay for a service that still has so many commercials? Also, who wants to do yoga with an ad for Carnation Instant Breakfast in the middle of your downward dog?

7. Gabe has been so unbelievably wonderful lately. He is sweet and kind and helpful and I just want him to be like this forever.

I love coffee too and add a lot of milk. It’s probably close to an au lait without the milk steamed. I still consider myself a coffee fan but am also workin to be less embarrassed by it. There is no shame in how I take my coffee!

Hey, milk has protein! (I’m the same way.)

    1) You look adorable; your sister, too.
    5) I think we train ourselves to ignore the mess, because I have the exact same feeling of “OMG, my house is a mess” (or cluttered or just NOT neat and clean) each time I take a photo, too!
    6) I’m pretty sure I’d be PISSED if commercials showed up in the middle of any exercise class. No bueno.
    7) Will you please ask Gabe to send some of his good juju to Gavin, who is going through a monster phase as we speak (though, he was awfully sweet this morning, so maybe the tides are turning??)

Coffee with a little bit of milk or cream is just heaven in a mug. I can drink it black, but it’s just amazing with a little bit of dairy goodness!
Also love that dress you’re wearing!

I didn’t know we were supposed to be embarrassed by coffee with sugar and cream. Try heavy cream — you don’t need as much and it soooo great!

Ha. We’re not supposed to be embarrassed! I’ve just encountered coffee purists that act like you’re weak if you use cream. (I’ve used heavy cream in my coffee when we had some extra left and OMG SO GOOD!)

Cute dress! Sucks that there are commercials, especially in a workout episode! Fail!

I never could drink my coffee black until we got a Chemex. Life changing!! It’s so so good, no cream required! Try one if you haven’t. :)

I’ve always been intrigued, but since they’re on the pricey side, I’ve never tried it! I need to find a friend with one and try it… :)

Aw, Gabe is such a cutie. Glad he’s going through a good phase :) I love your globe, that’s all I noticed in the picture but I don’t care much about a little clutter!

HULU PLUS HAS COMMERCIALS? This feels insane to me – & makes me glad I still haven’t figured out how Hulu works, because I’d probably pay for Plus, & I’d probably be angry about it.

I still can’t drink any coffee that’s not a latte. I’m still embarrassed about it.

I didn’t think it was possible for you to be any cuter! sounds like you and your (equally adorable) sister had a great time! the incident with the wine and spit bucket is hilarious.

COFFEE. Oh, sweet heavenly, fills-my-soul-with-pleasure coffee. I take mine with half & half and 1 splenda or, like you, I go without sugar if I’m eating something sweet while drinking coffee. I wouldn’t bother drinking coffee black when there are so many flavored creamers to experiment with!

I tried the free trial of Hulu Plus and was kinda excited about it until it had all the commercials. I have cable and there is no way I would pay for Hulu Plus WITH commercials. It really floored me that there were commercials.

I feel like a little milk (or cream, or egg-nog…) in coffee adds a little bit of class. Plus, that’s how my parents both drink their coffee and I always like trying to match my coffee color with how I remember theirs being as a kid. Makes me feel close even when I’m far away. I’ve also heard a rumor that adding a bit of milk to your coffee and especially tea helps to keep those beverages from staining your teeth!

It was so great meeting you last week!
And I, too, drink my coffee with just a splash of skim milk. I prefer it that way. And I have tried over and over again to give up my coffee addiction, but I just love it too much. And I love how coffee makes you feel & how it brings people together (yes, I realize it’s *just* coffee… but it’s SO much more than that, right??).
